About DELO

A fundamental key partnership between traditional forms of art such as paintings, is that of the frame that carries it. We value the partnership between our art and the frame that makes it whole. I Made Budiarta, mostly known by many as DELO, is a wonderful partner for Sawidji.

Second generation framer, graduate of Seni Rupa (Fine Art Studies), a painter and carver himself, the frames that DELO supplies for Sawidji are as much part of our work as the work we do ourselves.

Delo Made Budiarta

My childhood years were spent in Tegalalang, Gianyar. Many things happened there that made me stronger. From when I was 10 years old, I had started to work with my hands, to make something so that I could earn a living. When in fact, many children the same age, were too busy playing, enjoying their freedom. I was not pushed to work so young by my parents, it was merely my own desire to learn something, to acquire a skill.

Delo, Early Education

From the age of 6, Delo already learned to paint in the traditional method. Painters lived far away from his home. In order to find a teacher, he would walk 3km each way. There was no available transport at that time. Delo would cross large rivers to get to where he wanted to go.

Soon, his parents would move to Denpsar in order to find work. This left Delo alone in the village. When he completed Middle School, he followed on to Denpasar in pursuit of a higher formal education. In Denpasar, his father had already started a framing business. There, he often would help out in his fathers’ framing workshop. To summarise, when his father had passed away, Delo automatically would continue the legacy and carry on the family business.

Reflections on Career

Before things really started, there were already many different challenges and learning curves. From manual methods to the additions of more progressive technology. From local materials to importing different materials. Delo is now considered a master of all types of framing. His modest, quiet personality doesn’t speak much, but his reputation amongst artists, professionals and hobbyists, as well as students, speak volumes of his skill, discipline and standards.

Mentorship Philosophy

Since the beginning of his framing career, there are many staff that have since set out on their own and opened up their own independent businesses. Delo holds the principle of imparting his knowledge to his team, asa a way that he contributes back to his community. Providing someone with a skill that can support them in life. Seeing them progress and become independent is something that gives him much happiness.

Receiving special assignments from famous artists give Delo great satisfaction. He has been assigned to frame works for Uyanto from Tabanan, as well as other known artists such as Irawan and Yudiana. Most memorable has been to frame for paintings by the famous Gunarsah. He has framed many traditional paintings, but through a gallery. He enjoys framing traditional paintings, with the traditional balinese stylisations.

Delo is a nickname from my great great grandparents (Buyut). I don’t know why I was given the name, but the name is what stuck and the name that everybody knows.

Special Note of Thanks

My success I have received is not removed from the support behind me of a beautiful woman, my wife. Who have supported and been my companion throughout our journey from 2004 until today, devoted and steadfast, throughout the ups and the downs.

Delo Framing is now an established name, with 3 branches in Denpasar. He has been heading this business since 2000, following on from his father’s pioneering. In his spare time, Delo is still a keen traditional artist and wood carver. Sawidji Gallery appreciates the support and care Delo provides to our projects. Having our works in his capable and discerning care, is of great value to Sawidji.
