Description

Bison by Nyoman Handi is a mixed-media painting. Handi works with acrylic, inks, watercolours and often different types of pens. Highly experimental in his technique, Nyoman Handi is known for pushing personal limits in his explorations.

In ‘Bison’, is part of a series of four that explores a similar theme. Alluding to ancient social structures through the stylistic references to ancient cave paintings, Handis’ work asks us to think of natural orders and simpler value systems. Much of Handis’ art deals with the repercussions of changes in social behaviours. Including waste and damage to our environment and our increasingly neglectful attitudes towards Mother Nature.

Interesting things about the Bison: The surviving American Bisons today descend from the Ancient Bison, which traces back over 240,000 years ago. The Lakota people believe that Bisons are sacred. They are a symbol of abundance and manifestation. The Lakota Sioux have a belief that the birth of a White Bison is the most sacred of all signs. A lesson from the Bison is that one does not have to struggle to survive if the right action is joined by the right prayer. The birth of a sacred white buffalo is a sign of hope and an indication of good times to come.

In these artists, miniature paintings have a beautiful spontaneity and energy. Quite known for his large mix of media installations as well as canvas works Handis’ smaller works on paper have an intimacy and a gentler mood about them that is special.
