‘Dimensi Purba’ (Ancient Dimension) by Ketut ‘Kaprus’ Jaya, 2014.

The ancient objects often found in Bali whether its textiles or statues..Monochromatic tones, a little bit of colour. I look at cave relief sculpture. Sometimes the shapes and lines are so simple but very strong. The simple colours is very enigmatic, with a power and energy of their own. This is what I find very inspiring. When I reflect on this, I think in the past, our Ancestors when they create, they create from pure place of inspiration. I think that’s why these simple shapes hold such meaning and energy. For me this is very artistic.

~ Ketut ‘Kaprus’ Jaya

The piece ‘Dimensi Purba’ by Ketut Jaya is undoubtedly one of my personal favourites. From a collection of many whose depth is intuitive and unpredictable, this piece has a simplified colour palette. This simplified colour pallette in this instance is a result of the subject of inspiration. The subject of ancient artefacts. Ancient objects, that have a tendency of muted colours. That reflect age and time.

The result in this piece is wonderfully enigmatic. The chaos and the intensity of Jaya’s process is still very much apparent. However, in this case, it is tempered, not in energy but by selective palette. There is an opportunity to savour this mood. This sense of captured time. We get to feel this atmosphere, and an aura of this ancient world. A calm and quiet.

A captured memory..

Aptly, it is titled Ancient Dimension. A window opens, and through the depiction of Jaya’s love of his culture, he is exploring this appreciation and connection through the passage of time. Ketut Kaprus Jaya’s paintings are a ‘moment captured’ of the energies in Nature. This piece is capturing perhaps this energy, this moment, from Nature’s Memories. Perhaps this is what an old photograph of Nature’s energies may appear like.

Many of Ketut Kaprus Jaya’s works are coded with a subconscious symbolism. Perhaps not deliberate or academic. It is instinctive. it is a part of the very intimate relationship that lies between us and Nature within the Balinese culture. This language that unites the two worlds is one. Though unspoken, it is well acknowledged by the majority.
