‘The shapes and designs that are hand cut for offerings in prayer, in Temples and in our home Temples are the shapes and lines that I am focusing on in this work. They are in every ritual. It takes times to make it, and inside homes in Bali, mostly, will be making these in the evenings. The wholeheartedness of this is the feeling within this piece. Similar to artists making their work.

Ketut Kaprus Jayas’ works are categorically abstract expressionist. There is an aspect that we should include when looking at the works of Kaprus Jaya. That is the intuitive and meditative elements in the artists’ approach to creating art.

Some points on the composition..

The decorative designs that are hand cut into the leaves that are then constructed into Canang Saris and other forms of offerings are detailed and intricate. If you are familiar with the shapes of these and look upon this painting, you can feel the merging of those shapes and lines.

Kaprus Jaya’s works start with a focal point of reflection. Not a focal point to render and emulate, but a focal point that opens the door to a feeling that is embodied there. I believe that is why several of his works are titled by ‘dimensions.’ It starts with an idea,.. not even an idea,. but like a singular object that represents something  that connects clearly to the feelings of the artist. The subject becomes a doorway, a passage to paint the ‘dimension’ of those feelings. The colours and shapes and lines merge together in a landscape that expresses the sense of peace, revitalisation and purity that he perceives in the act of offerings that have been made so simply.

About the Artist

Ketut Jaya was born in Budakeling Karangasem Regency Bali, on the 15th July 1970. A veteran of the highs and lows of Balinese Art Industry, he has remained constant to his art with no prevarications. Through three decades of professional art practice, much of his work has been categorised Abstract Expressionism, with strong intuitive elements. Whilst maintaining a constant discipline in his technical skills through portraiture and landscape. Ketut Jaya has maintained and guarded the purity of his creative process. True to self, to the moment, to Nature. Kaprus Jaya is part of Sawidji Artist Collective & Gallery, Bali.
