Description

Kasaya Buddha Artbox is a  hand carved by wood sculptor Ketut Dana.  The statue is from Crocodile Wood. Then, it is hand painted by our artists in the traditional saffron colour of the Buddhist Monk’s robes . The Buddha carving is placed inside a box frame with matt ivory white finish.

‘Kasaya’, The Saffron Robe

The Saffron robe that is seen worn by Buddhist monks  is mostly seen in southeast Asia. The Theravada Buddhist monks wear saffron-dyed robes, which date back centuries. From what information we have today, it is  believed to be the closest colour to what was worn by the Buddha and his disciples centuries ago. In Sanskrit, this robe is called ‘Kasaya‘ after the saffron dye from which it gets its colour. Orange was chosen mainly because of the dye available at the time. The robes themselves are meant to symbolize simplicity and detachment of materialism.

The history of the Kasaya itself is really interesting. The Buddhist Kasaya is said to be from Ancient India. At first as a set of robes for the disciples and followers of Gautama Buddha. There is a known version of this robe that has a pattern on it, like that of an Asian rice field. Originally, Kasaya were made of old and throw away fabrics. No longer used materials which were then stitched together to form three ractangular pieces of cloth. Each piece has its own name. They are fitted over the body in a very specific way. The three pieces that make up the Kasaya are: the antarvasa, uttarasanga and the samghati. Together they from the ‘triple robe’ or ‘ticivara’. The Ticivara has even more significant layers of meaning which is explained in the Theravada Vinaya.
