Panji Masks King and Queen
Originally, this art form was born in East Java. It then spread to Cirebon during the reign of the Jenggala kingdom approximately 10-11 CE. It was around that time that the Malangan Panji mask dance developed.
The Panji mask such as these Panji Masks King and Queen are part of a set that perform a dance symbolising the great universal event. Which is the creation of the universe and how human beings came to be in the beginning. The Panji mask or Cirebon mask repeats the primordial event of mankind, how “creation” occurs. In the early history, this dance was only danced by kings.
