‘Tarian Gelombang Sang Naga’ translates as ‘Dragon Wave Dance’. Much of Handi’s works deal with themes of change. Not only in the environment but also in individual and collective social behaviours. His paintings reveal a layered exploration of stylised influences that he combines boldly. From tribal art to post-modernist ideas as well as energy often found in Brut Art styles. The same themes are explored throughout his mixed media and sculptures.
In many of Handis’ works, the artists’ dedication and concern with environmental issues are primary themes. Nagas are often associated with the elements of weather. Rivers and lakes, wind and rain. Handis’ treatment of significant issues has the same calm and steadiness inherent in the artist. Often lyrical and poetic, the tone of the message is clear as peaceful reminders, through a spirit of gratitude.
