Made Duatmika, born in Jembrana in 1970, is a visual artist who graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali. He has won the Philip Morris Art Award (1998). Active in Group and Solo exhibitions since 1996. A teacher in art education, he is also a longstanding member of the art community Militant Arts. His works often explore social themes through a vibrant and expressive visual aesthetic.

When I make a work,.. I would like people to see it and have their imagination also get inspired. They should have the freedom to go wherever they want..

Made Duatmika

A Modest Mastery

Made Duatmika have an unassuming presence. It is steady, open, truly positive, and gentle with him wherever he goes. This warmth, this steadiness, is a core presence in his work. This modesty often makes his artistic mastery a little bit hidden. Both the complexity of his subjects as well as diversity of applied techniques.

Artistic Style

Despite being a strong figurative expressionist artist, the roots in traditional aesthetics remain present. This series features linear, patterned compositions—often with simple dots—adding to the innocent and playful feel. Despite the simplicity, Duatmika’s mastery of layered colours and texture is a testament to a refined yet bold technique. His sensitive linework, visible across both canvas and rice paper, showcases his visual character and technical mastery, regardless of the medium.

The diversity of interests and lifestyles in this work shows that differences are not obstacles but rather wealth in themselves. This means that being different is not an obstacle but an asset. ~ Made Duatmika

Getting to Know Made Duatmika

What does it mean to be an artist for Made Duatmika?

To me, art is a way to express the heart of my feelings on canvas and channel happiness to other people.

What is in your heart?

There are a lot of things. Back in school, I liked to choose themes about women, social issues and social life. I like to explore various topics in my work. In the last, I try to explore paintings about memories.

Made Duatmika and His Perspective of Past Memories

My memories from my childhood, daily life, gardening, farming and the habits I was taught growing up in my village in Jembrana influence my works. You can say that I am far from the art found in the city area. The influences of popular performing arts in my childhood, like Barong Dance and Legong Dance, were not very common and hardly ever performed.

In the past, there were plenty of Jegog dancers, wearing a Dutch-like military costume. Sadly, there aren’t anymore Jegog dancers found, only the music is left.

Made Duatmika

In Jembrana, classical dances like Panyembrahma, Margapati and Oleg are the most often performed dances in the village. Local dances like Jegog, following musical instruments and gamelan, Kendang Mebarung, which is made of bamboo, are very rare to find nowadays. Jegog combines a dance, song and fighting style arranged by the ‘Dag’.

Jembrana and Its Culture

There is also something about ‘not understanding Jembrana people. ‘ That leads me to a strange question: their way of interaction. Jembrana is always confrontational, or perhaps you can say competitive.. They have to race. As if there is a music Jegog, they have to compete until the gamelan is broken. There always has to be competition. It is part of Jembrana culture.

Blue symbolises calm and fertility. When our thoughts are calm and happy, they can also be blue.

The bull is a symbol of spirit and motivation. The bull water buffalo helps the farmer, and the starling is the freedom of my mind and imagination. There is also someone who made the story about the water buffalo and the starling. But I have not read it. ~Made Duatmika
