Wayang refers to a Javanese and Balinese shadow puppet play. Definition noun: wayang kulit; plural noun: wayang kulits. The Manus Wayang Rah Red Shadow Puppet is a set of contemporary Wayang shadow puppets. They are part of a conceptual art film installation exploring the contemporary human being.
Dibal Ranuh responds to the collaborative question ‘What makes us human?’ by the creation of this set of 5 Wayangs. In collaboration with artist Manus artists for Manus a Conscious Journey. The Red Wayang is present as part of a set of five colours inspired by the concept of the CMYK colour system and its white canvas, presenting different elements present in a human identity.
Red: When blessed with happiness and enjoyment in life (abundance), don’t be greedy (corruption, etc.), which may invite Nature’s rebuke in the form of diseases like covid, disasters, etc. These are all causes and consequences of human actions, including throwing rubbish carelessly…, creating floods ~ Dibal Ranuh
“It is interesting… the achievement of a creative work here is deep. I see it from my point of view as a Dalang. .. we don’t look at it as just shape. There is the spirit of wayang and this may transform into different variations to suit different contexts. Dibal captured the traditional spirit in a new shape, a spirit of tradition in a contemporary form to communicate a message. This is tradition captured but manifested anew to connect to our contemporary times.” ~ Dr. Gusti Sudarta The Contemporary Human on a Timeless Stage.
