Description
Alphabetical Distortion by Sava Larry ‘Istanbul’. Digital collage giclee art print.
This work is part of the ‘Volta’ series. A collection of digital collages combined with paintings by street artist ‘Istanbul’. He exhibited ‘Imago’ a solo exhibition at Joshua District Artspace in November 2023. The Volta series is a development from his explorations of transferring his street art expressions into different fine art mediums.
Alphabetical Distortion highlights the process identified by the artist throughout the ‘Volta’ series. Working through layers of line, shape and colour, is the merging of all those elements into one. A myriad of symbols merge, not randomly but through an optical processing that seems to represent the mind in its search for meaning. ‘Alphabetical’ suggests sequential, ordered and echoes the artists’ familiarity with typography and font, which is fundamental to street art. Here, ‘Distortion’ perhaps represents the letters giving way to a new chapter in his visual vocabulary. Morphing amidst a more complex range of visual elements. This seemingly contradictory title ‘Alphabetical Distortion’ is perhaps a very precise description of this explorative transition of the artists’ creative process.
“ To me, art is a powerful tool of interpretation. It is a reflection of the artist’s personality. A simple expression of the complex thought. In this series, the spectrum that represents the object beneath the object, or shapes within lines is not achieved randomly. It arrives through an optical process. You can say it is a process where the mind is trying to find meaning. It is an art form that does not represent an accurate depiction of visual reality. Instead, it is communicating through lines, shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks.” ~ Istanbul
