Banyan trees (Ficus Elastica) and Pule trees (Alstonia Scholaris) are the sacred trees of Bali. Pule trees are the main material for the carving of sacred masks. The trees are often at the centre of every village. Sacred masks have a special significance in Balinese culture. It is a special process that only a consecrated carver in Bali can do. To make a sacred mask. Also, the ceremonies involved in this process of carving a Sacred Mask is not a simple one.
It is also used for its medicinal properties for many different ailments. Similar to its history in India, where it is used in Ayurveda. It is used as an astringent herb for treating skin disorders, malarial fever, dysentery, diarrhoea and for snake bites. It is locally called the ‘Devil Tree’ as all parts of the plant are harmful to humans and cattle due to high toxicity.
