Description
Mermaids Reflection ‘Renungan Duyung’ by Wayan Wangen, 2012. Wood sculpture from Waru Wood( Hibiscus tiliaceus ), original piece by artist Wayan Wangen.
The Mermaid is a subject treated often in traditional sculpture. Many depictions are on the heavier side of stylisations. In some ways this piece is not different from that. Stylised with the decorative framing of the Mermaid set against the solid piece of the natural wood.
What is unusual in the Mermaids Reflection is the gesture and expression of the Mermaid. The reflective contemplation on her face and the positioning of the hand below her breast above her abdomen. This gesture, if positioned slightly lower towards her abdomen brings a strong correlation to mothers and motherhood. A nurturing or protective gesture of a woman expecting a child.
In being a little higher and tucked under her breast, it sends a slightly mixed message of whether this is one that is tied to heartache and sadness instead. Partnered with the sobriety of the Mermaids’ expression, perhaps there is less expectant joy and more sadness or regret.
